Dear Music Lovers,

Let’s celebrate Christmas and the holidays at the Neilson Hays Library on December 14 or December 15 with two of classical music’s most beloved compositions.

Antonio Vivaldi’s best-known work, The Four Seasons, is a group of four violin concertos that depicts the seasons of the year. Composed in 1723, it was a revolutionary idea to show that descriptive music could be taken seriously, and it set off a debate that lasted for centuries. Each of the 12 movements (3 per season) establishes a certain mood, against which events play out.

A passionate and richly romantic piece, the String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Opus 13 was composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1827, the year Ludwig von Beethoven died. Though only 18 at the time, Mendelssohn was already an experience composer of chamber music and was fascinated by the late works of Beethoven. He took Beethoven’s cyclic formal organization and developed it into radically new directions in his quartet.
