Beethoven’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 59, No. 3 is a work from his “middle” period and the last of his three “Razumovsky” cycle of string quartets commissioned by the Russian ambassador in Vienna, Count Andreas Razumovsky. This series of quartets was received with uncertainty because of the revolutionary nature of the content and emotional range, which deviated from the traditional chamber music at the time.
Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in A minor D 804 Op.29, known as the “Rosamunde” Quartet, is Schubert’s only string quartet that was published and performed in his lifetime. In composing, he often borrowed from his other compositions including songs and incidental music. This can be heard throughout this piece, especially in second movement where the music is taken from his composition of a song from the play “Rosamunde”, and hence the quartet’s nickname. The piece reflects the examination of transience, death and redemption, but also shows his stylistic maturity and melodic mastery.
